Sports, Health and Wellbeing

I’m a former Royal Marines Commando, a triple amputee, a father of three and a husband.

Over the years I’ve enjoyed raising money for military charities and was awarded the Pride Of Britain Award for fundraising as a result. I’ve represented the UK twice at The Invictus Games winning 11 medals and the award for stand out athlete. More recently I became a Trustee of the Charity REORG and whilst fundraising for them I broke a world open water swimming record. My aim now is to take my JustGiving page from £700,000 to £1,000,000 whilst also breaking a world record for a 100m truck pull.

What motivates me is my desire to see what the human body and mind can achieve which is why I’m always looking for the next challenge. I’m also keen to write a series of children’s books where hopefully I can have an impact on their mindsets and show them through story telling what we’re all capable of achieving.

Being disabled in 2024 is very different to how it used to be. There are so many advances in technology, opportunities for careers and communities available for help and support. Although we’re all on our own individual journeys and we all take different amounts of time to adjust and accept our situations, once we do we can really start to work towards an enjoyable and fulfilling future in both our personal and our professional lives.

Q&A

Mark Ormrod MBE
Set yourself goals, get good people around you, work towards those goals and understand you’re on your own unique journey.
I think the money that I’ve raised over the years has helped to provide practical support for the disabled community but I also hope that those who have seen the things I’ve been involved with have been inspired to take charge of their own situation and live life on their own terms.
I’m just about to start writing an autobiography and I’m hoping to write children’s books using myself (or a version of myself) as the main character so I can normalise disability and hopefully help to shape a positive mindset in children with disabilities. I’m also looking to do more presenting work in the media to represent the disabled community.
I train Brazilian JiuJitsu and I like to watch movies.
My family and eating pizza.
It’s difficult as this is an ever evolving problem but I think the issues are the same as they always have been, accessibility, employment opportunities, healthcare, social attitudes and many more.
The image shows a lady with blonde hair stood outside of a WH Smith store. Covering the entire store window is an image of triple amputee Mark Ormrod in his JiuJitsu gear sat on the floor looking down after a hard training session. The image is accompanied by a picture of an energy drink from the company C4 from a campaign in partnership with the charity REORG. The image is to promote inclusivity and is intended to inspire.
