Stefan Hoggan-Radu

Retired Para Athlete turned Political Activist

For more than 15 years, Stefan Hoggan-Radu was a performance para swimmer and para triathlete and competed all over the world from the USA to Italy, France and Scotland. His best place finish was 6th in the world at the Detroit ITU Triathlon in 2015.

Although Stefan loved his sports, throughout his career he suffered with poor mental health which was brought on by the stress and trauma of being severely bullied while he was at school, for having been born with one hand. Stefan now spends a lot of time in schools taking part in anti-bullying campaigns and telling kids his story in the hope that no more kids have to go through what he suffered.

When Stefan retired from professional sport in 2016, he began coaching the next generation of swimmers. He currently coaches disabled and non-disabled children at his old club, Carnegie Swimming Club.

Since retiring he has also focused more on his other passion: politics. Stefan is currently seeking selection to become the Scottish National Party (SNP) candidate in North East Fife for the 2021 Scottish parliamentary elections.

“Whatever you do in life let it make you smile, laugh and love because life is too short for hate.”

This year Stefan will be joining us as a judge for the Power 100 2021.

“When I was asked to join the 2021 Shaw Trust Power 100 Judging Panel I was was blown over with gratitude. I was on the list myself in 2019 and 2020 alongside pretty big names and it was incredible to be recognised for the work I have done over the last 15 years. However, to be given the honour of now being a judge of this list is just a step beyond. I am very excited to see who has been nominated and to work with the other Judges to finalise the 2021 list.”
