Mairead Clabby BSc

Disability and Mental Health Champion and Influencer, Disability Workplace Champion, Police Officer at Merseyside Police, National Suicide Prevention Alliance, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service

Education

I have been a member of Merseyside Police for 12 years and I have been a voluntary committee member of my workplace Disability Support Network since 2016 helping those with disabilities specialising in mental illnesses and neurological conditions.

As a Prince’s Trust Leader in the Fire Service, I championed young people with ADHD, Autism and Neurodivergence as a mentor using my own lived experiences.

I implemented positive changes for those with neurodiversity in Custody and Interview settings and I launched an Autism Attention Card in my Police Service.

I have been a mental health champion since 2016 providing talks about my lived experiences with mental illnesses and enacting a policy change in the recruitment of Police Officers.

In my workplace I have planned and coordinated events such as a Mental Health Awareness Week and an ADHD Awareness Day with local charities. I provided a talk about my own mental illnesses to help others on International Day of Persons with Disabilities which was streamed online to over 10,000 people and I have also taken part in a Blue Light Services national Mind (the mental health charity) video. I have also written for Mind’s website, the Disabled Police Association’s blog and Grazia.

In my own time, I have shaped mental health resources for emergency services from Mind nationally, I created a mental health resource booklet for an emergency services and armed forces charity and I have delivered mental health awareness inputs to young people on Prince’s Trust courses.

I have been a Prince’s Trust Leader within the Fire Service leading many young people in care, carers, those with mental illnesses, neurodiversities and with disabilities to go on to jobs, further training and education and building their confidence.

have been nominated previously for an International Association of Women in Policing Award, British Association of Women in Policing Police Officer of the Year Award, a National Diversity Award for Positive Role Model in Disability and Merseyside Police Community First Awards in Diversity and Inclusion on two separate occasions respectively.

“Disability champions are all about giving a voice to those who aren’t always listened to.”
