Martin Hibbert

Vice President at Spinal Injuries Association

Community Advocate

Martin Hibbert was one of the closest survivors of the Manchester arena bomb attack in 2017. Despite his injuries he has raised over £885,000 to date for the Spinal Injuries Association following his successful climb of Kilimanjaro in 2022.

Martins Mountain was all about proving what disabled people can achieve when they are given the right support. Martin’s focus was to say look at the everyday mountains that disabled people have to face in the UK and how many of us are still struggling to find the right support. If we had the right support, then imagine what might be possible.

He harnessed the media interest from press and television surrounding his story to highlight the injustices that disabled people face on a daily basis and what needs to change. Following recent meetings with Tom Pursglove MP, the minister for disabled people Martin is now a part of the government department’s Disability Perceptions Communications Campaign.

He has met with his constituency MP Sir Lyndsay Hoyle, speaker of the House of Commons and the Mayor of Manchester Andy Burnham to highlight many important issues and continues to campaign for change.

“I’m delighted to be recognised as a disability advocate and included in the 2023 Disability Power 100. There is still so much work to be done for disabled people to feel appreciated and I feel honoured that my story and profile can bring about that change in attitude and the perception towards disability.”
